Wigan Snub Everton Offer For Leighton Baines - The Latics To Bring In Cover At Left-Back By Signing West Brom’s Paul Robinson
Wigan Athletic have snubbed Everton’s £4m-plus player bid for left-back Leighton Baines. However, Chris Hutchings is closing in on bringing in cover for the in-demand full-back in the form of Paul Robinson of West Bromwich Albion.
The Latics had earlier agreed to a reported £6m offer from Sunderland for the 22-year-old but the England U-21 international later turned down the move to the Stadium of Light.
"We turned down a £4m-plus player bid from Everton - that's as far as it has gone," Hutchings told BBC Five Live.
"I'd like him to stay but I can't stop speculation and offers being made. It's bad business if we don't accept a bid similar to what Sunderland offered."
Liverpool are also said to be keeping an eye on Baines as Rafa Benitez is eager to bring in a left-back and their current first-target for that position is believed to be Manchester United’s Gabriel Heinze.
Meanwhile, 28-year-old Robinson is reportedly set to make a £1.5million move from the Baggies to The JJB Stadium.
"Robinson is a very good player, he's a tenacious full-back with plenty of experience," Hutchings told the Manchester Evening News.
"He has also shown a hunger for this club and is keen to come on board.
"Left-back is the only position we have not had cover for. We've been playing Kevin Kilbane there as a stop gap."
