Wigan Will Fight Against Man United, Says Whelan

Wigan Athletic Other English and International Football News

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan lashed out at reports claiming that the Latics will not be a hindrance to Manchester United, who are looking to retain the Premiership title, on the final day of the season at the JJB Stadium.

The Red Devils only need a victory to retain the title, as they have a better goal-difference than Chelsea, who play Bolton Wanderers on Sunday. The Latics meanwhile, are in the safety of the mid-table placings and as such have nothing to play for.

However, Whelan claimed that Steve Bruce's side will be giving the match their 'best shot.'

“All this rubbish in the press about ‘we will be rolling over for Manchester United’ is complete and absolute rubbish,” Whelan told an audience at the Latics’ annual awards dinner.

“You ask the boys, they’ll be fighting their socks off, I’ll tell you. If we can beat Man U, we are going to beat them. We’re going to get stuck in and give it our best shot.

“Whatever they say in Chelsea, we’re Wigan, and we will try and beat any team that comes to the JJB Stadium.”
