Wigan Athletic have confirmed the injury blow to left-back Erik Edman with the Swedish international set for around six month layoff due to the anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee.

The 29-year-old has been impressive since his January move from Rennes, and his absence has come at a crucial stage as the Latics battle to save their top-flight status.

Latics manager Steve Bruce said on the club’s official website: "It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural, and we will certainly miss him. He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best."
