West Bromwich Albion are believed to be considering an offer for China captain Zheng Zhi from Charlton Athletic.

Baggies manager Tony Mowbray is believed to have discussed the possibility of bringing the versatile Zheng to the Hawthorns, while trying to sign his team-mate Madjid Bougherra from the Addicks as he looks to strengthen his squad for his first season as a Premiership manager.

27-year-old Zheng can play in defence or midfield, though it is thought that Mowbray would want him to fill the holding-midfield role at West Brom.

Charlton boss Alan Pardew has been told that he needs to offload some players as the club enters it’s final season of parachute payments following relegation from the Premier League in 2007.

Talks are believed to be ongoing between the two sides for Zheng, who already has a work permit until 2010, with Mowbray eager to lure the Chinese International away from The Valley.

Meanwhile the Baggies are considering an improved offer for Per Ciljan Skjelbred from Norwegian club Rosenborg, who value the 21-year-old at £3million (€3.8m), with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers and Ajax all linked to the Norwegian International.
