Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids is reportedly close to joining his old club Ajax on a 18-month contract, while Tottenham Hotspur would not sell Egyptian striker Mido, even as Martin Jol’s side are leading the chase to sign Southampton full-back Gareth Bale.

“They (Ajax) are having a deal with him (Edgar Davids), they said in Holland, and the only thing is we have to agree with them,” said Spurs manager Jol.

Meanwhile, Spurs are reportedly eyeing a swoop for Liverpool’s England striker Peter Crouch. However, the 25-year-old Crouch said that he is happy at Liverpool and Reds boss Rafa Benitez has no plans to sell the former Southampton, Aston Villa and QPR player.

But the situation around Mido, who has not held a regular starting place this season, continues to be enigmatic. While Jol had ruled out the sale of the powerful 23-year-old front-man, Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce is persistently linked with a swoop for the former Ajax, Marseille and Roma man.

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Davids, who came to White Hart Lane in August 2005 from Inter Milan on a free transfer, has been rarely included in the first-team line-up this season and is understood to be fallen out with his countryman Jol.

Jol feels, “It's better if he (Davids) plays regularly because of his age.”

On reports suggesting a free transfer for Davids to Ajax, Jol said: “That's what our chairman does, gets good deals.”

One factor which seems to have cancelled out a speculated sale of Mido, is fellow Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov suffering a groin injury.

Spurs are also reported to have made a 10 million pounds bid for Saints’ Wales international defender Bale, 17. That have put them ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised Bale and could be a last-minute bidder for the highly rated left-back.
