Spurs Boss Martin Jol : "Beckham Is A Non-Runner" Former England Skipper May Move To MLS

Tottenham Hotspur Football News Premiership Transfer News

Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol has ruled out an approach for former England captain David Beckham, despite reports that he could be ready to bring the Real Madrid star to White Hart Lane.

Beckham has become a fringe player at Real Madrid since the arrival of Fabio Capello as the club's new manager in the summer and it has widely been speculated that he will see out his contract, which expires next summer.

Beckham remains a popular figure in Spain with the club's supporters, but with Capello seemingly far from convinced about where the player fits into his plans, it seems that the former England captain must now seek pastures new.

The lure of a move to America to join Major League Soccer has become more o an option for the 31-year-old, following the introduction of a new 'Designated Player' rule.

MLS chiefs, in an attempt to promote the sport, have introduced the rule which will allow clubs to bring in big name players, without breaking the league’s £1 million salary cap.

The MLS are willing to pay £209, 216 towards the salary of a designated player, with any additional costs being the responsibility of the respective club involved.

Beckham has also been linked with a move to The US, with Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls both being mentioned as destinations, and following this radical rule change, it may be enough to swing things for Beckham.

A move to The Premiership is still likely to be the outcome, but even though there are reports that claim Beckham is ready to take a major wage cut in order to win a return to Manchester United, that move is unlikely while Sir Alex Ferguson is still in charge.

Now Spurs boss Martin Jol has now closed the door on any transfer to White Hart Lane for Becks, saying to the Daily Star Sunday: “Of course, I have a lot of respect for David Beckham, but I’ve never said I want to sign him.

“We are fine here as it is. We already have Aaron Lennon. Beckham is a non-runner.”
