Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has laughed off suggestions that Sir Alex Ferguson's side were out of title race and has expressed confidence that by Christmas the Red Devils will be in better position.

United beat Tottenham at the weekend 1-0 but prior to the kick-off of the Old Trafford match on Sunday, there were suggestions that the Red Devils would have no chance to retain the title if they do not defeat Spurs.

Before the Sunday win, United had just two points from three games.

The England international said:"Let's see where we are by Christmas."

He told the Daily Star: "Everyone was going on about the season being over, but that is silly after only three games, although that is the way it is these days.”

"We know what we have got to do - and that is to win games. If we do that, we will put ourselves in a position to be successful this season.”

"Time will tell. I think it is too early to say if the big four will drop many more points. Let's look at the table at Christmas and we will have a better idea."
