Reading 1 Everton 0 - Stephen Hunt Takes The Royals To Victory - McFadden & Johnson Denied As Toffees Taste First Defeat
Reading scored a 1-0 win over Everton to register thier first win in the Premiership at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday...
After two consecutive wins, David Moyes' side suffered their first defeat this season while Steve Coppell's side registered their first win after earlier having drawn one and lost another match.
Reading led 1-0 at half time through Stephen Hunt, who scored with a neat placement in the 44th minute of play. In the second half, Toffees missed out on chance to equalise as James McFadden and Andy Johnson found the woodwork.
In the 8th minute of play, Hunt’s powerful strike at Everton’s goal from the left flank missed the target narrowly.
While two minutes later, Everton’s Mikel Arteta unselfishly squared the ball to Johnson, but the latter blasted wide from close quarters.
After much probing, Reading’s Andre Bikey sent a long cross to Kevin Doyle whose rasping volley from outside the 18-yard box failed to find the mark.
When it looked the teams were heading for a goalless half, Reading broke the deadlock in the 44th minute of play when substitute Ulises De la Cruz long throw-in was nicely blocked by team mate Doyle where the ball traveled to Hunt who finished with a right foot placement.
In the second half, Everton pressed hard to come back into the match in search of an equaliser but failed to convert from the number of chances created as tight defending by their rivals did not allow the Toffees to penetrate the danger zone.
However the Toffees had the best of opportunity to level terms but luck did not smile their way as in the 84th minute.
McFadden darted down the right side and on seeing the Royals keeper Marcus Hahnemann out of his position coolly lobbed the ball but unfortunately it hit the top right corner of the post and the ball rebounded to Andrew Johnson where his strike too hit the foot of the post to the dismay of the team and supporters.
