Bosses at the Premier League have drafted a new proposal to take the Premiership around the globe. Which would be played in the format of five four-team tournaments in geographically spread destinations that had bid for the rights to host the mini-tournaments, with each club guaranteed a £5million windfall.

Earlier this year Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore was forced to shelve his idea for a ‘39th game’, with both fans groups and FIFA president Sepp Blatter pouring cold water on the idea. The FA also had concerns over the impact it might have on a possible bid for England to stage the World Cup in 2018.

Now the Premier League have a new idea, which would see a winter break introduced from 2010, with all 20 Premier League sides competing in mini-tournaments in places such as Dubai. The tournaments would be worth around £5million to each club, with there being a seeding system so each destination was guaranteed a top five club from the previous season, and a bonus for all the tournament winners.

One of the options being considered for the winter break is a 12-day break after the FA Cup third round in January. This would allow clubs to go to places such as Asia and Australia without having an impact on the Premiership season, while keeping a competitive edge bubbling.

The clubs would be mandated to field their strongest teams in these tournaments, as the blueprint for this project is to let people around the globe see the stars of the Premiership live, while turning it into a truly global brand.

For any proposal to go through it would have to be endorsed by FIFA, but with Scudamore now on the strategy committee it is likely that he has learnt from his mistake with the ‘39th game’ and will get it signed off first.

However, one person who will not be happy is England boss Fabio Capello, who wants the introduction of a winter break to let key members of the England squad like John Terry and Steven Gerrard rest from a heavy fixture schedule.

This appears on the surface like a more structured plan than the ‘39th game’ idea and below is an idea of how it could shape up.
