Premiership Results Round-up: Newcastle Beat Tottenham, Move Above Boro – Chelsea Win To Keep In Touch With Man United
Newcastle United scored an important victory coming from behind, to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at White Hart Lane and got themselves up to 12th place in the Premiership standings.
It was the second successive win for the side under Kevin Keegan and lifts them nine points above the drop zone. Last weekend’s win at home against strugglers Fulham was the first taste of success for Keegan in his second spell as the manager of the Toon.
Spurs had taken the lead through Darren Bent in the 26th minute. However, the Tynesiders clawed their way back into the game with Nicky Butt getting the equaliser at the stroke of half time. Geremi and skipper Michael Owen scored in the 52nd and 65th minutes respectively. Obafemi Martins rounded the scoreline with the goal with seven minutes from time.
Earlier on Sunday, Chelsea hung on to their first-half goal to edge past an unlucky Middlesbrough side at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are now back into the second place, five points behind leaders Manchester United, who trounced Aston Villa 4-0 yesterday, with six games left in the campaign.
The all-important goal came in the 5th minute through Ricardo Carvalho, who headed home from the centre of penalty area after a left-footed free-kick by Wayne Bridge from left channel following a foul by Gary O'Neil on Michael Ballack.
Boro were left to rue their fate as the frame of the goal came in way of the Teessiders getting something out the game.
Chelsea were lucky not to have conceded in the 73rd minute as Carlo Cudicini coming out a long way, was nowhere near to the intended clearance and substitute Afonso Alves kept his calm to try a shot from 20 yards on the left channel, but the goalpost denied the Brazilian his first goal for Boro.
Boro were left frustrated in the 83rd minute when Alves and David Wheater header hit the cross bar after a free-kick from Stewart Downing from left.
