Premiership Results Round Up – Everton Beat Wigan & Man City Lucky Against West Ham – Liverpool Drop To Sixth
Everton beat Wigan 2-1 while Manchester City held West Ham United to a 1-1 draw in the Premiership on Sunday, the results thus pushing Liverpool to sixth place in the table.
The Toffees are now in the fourth place, while City take fifth position. However, Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool have two games in hand one of which they play on Monday night against Aston Villa.
In a game of few chances at the City of Manchester Stadium, Sven-Goran Eriksson’s City, who are yet to lose in the league at home this season, were fortunate to get a point as the equaliser from Darius Vassell was controversial. Moreover, Joe Hart made a great save from point blank range shot by Mark Noble in the second half, and late in the match the England U-21 keeper tipped Carlton Cole’s header over the cross bar.
Alan Curbishley’s side had sprung into the lead in the 8th minute, as Cole finished a chance with a brilliant overhead kick off a cross from Freddie Ljungberg from the right side of the penalty area after City skipper Richard Dunne had given away possession.
The hosts did not have to wait for too long to restore parity as sloppy defending from the Hammers following a corner kick from Martin Petrov, saw Vassell poking the ball home from the six yard box in the 16th minute, although the England striker was in an off-side position.
Earlier today at the JJB Stadium, The Toffees scored a 2-1 victory over the Latics, to move into the fourth position in the table.
Andrew Johnson (39) and Joleon Lescott (42) got the goals for David Moyes side. A Phil Jagielka own-goal in the 53rd minute had rekindled hopes of a fight-back for Steve Bruce’s side, but the visitors held on to come up with three points.
Following are the results of Saturday’s games: Birmingham 0-1 Chelsea, Blackburn 1-1 Middlesbrough, Fulham 0-3 Arsenal, Tottenham 2-0 Sunderland, Portsmouth 3-1 Derby, Reading 0-2 Man United, Newcastle 0-0 Bolton.
