Liverpool 2-1 Middlesbrough Match Report - Captain Gerrard Fires Late Winner For The Reds
An injury time goal by captain Steven Gerrard enabled Liverpool to come away with a narrow 2-1 win against Middlesbrough in their Premier League encounter at Anfield on Saturday.
Gerrard proved to be the hero of the match for Liverpool as he scored a match winning goal just seconds before the final whistle to ensure that his side collected the full three points from the encounter with Boro.
The Reds had an encouraging outing with Robbie Keane, who joined this summer from Tottenham Hotspur, and Fernando Torres combination catching everyone’s eye.
In the very second minute, Liverpool came forward with a well built move when Spanish ace Fernando Torres weaved his way past the defenders and neatly set up Dirk Kuyt however the latter's powerful shot was brilliantly saved by the outstretched arm of Boro keeper Ross Turnbull.
Torres was once again on the prowl for the Reds keeping the rival defenders on their toes. This time he made a fine run and rolled the ball towards overlapping Robbie Keane who failed to direct his shot goalwards.
Liverpool continued with their onslaught with Dossena charging into Boro territory and flashed a dangerous cross which was timely collected by Turnbull.
Five minutes on resumption of play, Liverpool’s hunger to take the lead further increased. Former Spurs striker Robbie Keane crossed the ball over to Dirk Kuyt whose header from the centre of the penalty area was saved by Boro keeper Turnbull.
Minutes later, Boro forward Tuncay Sanli beautifully controlled the ball on the edge of the box but his shot was saved by Pepe Reina.
Middlesbrough surprised the home fans in the 70th minute when Mido drilled home the ball from the left flank to give Boro a vital lead.
Thereon Boro did all they could to defend the lead and successfully did so until the 86th minute when a blunder by their defender proved costly for them.
Emanuel Pogatetz in the process of clearing away a Jamie Carragher goal bound shot, saw the ball enter his own net.
Boro almost took the lead once again in the 88th minute, however Mido’s left-footed shot from the centre of the penalty missed the target narrowly.
When it looked like the game was going to end in a 1-1 draw Steven Gerrard proved to be the hero for Liverpool coming with an unexpected goal just seconds before the final whistle.
