Match Report: Fulham 2 – 0 Birmingham City – McBride And Nevland Seal Three Precious Points For Cottagers
Fulham have pocketed three priceless points with a 2-0 win over Birmingham City in the Premier League match at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
This victory by Fulham over Birmingham City be a salvation to remain in the Premier League next season, depending on the outcome of the last game of the season - against Portsmouth next Sunday.
The Cottagers enjoyed a psychological advantage going into the match, having won three matches out of the last three, while City hadn’t recorded a win from their last four games.
Fulham dominated most of the proceedings, creating some deadly moves but somehow the much needed goals were missing.
In the 7th minute Fulham’s Jimmy Bullard took a free kick which set-up Simon Davies who, without wasting time, unleashed a shot. However City keeper Maik Taylor pushed the goalbound shot to safety.
The teams found it hard to create openings since the defence on either side looked solid, hence restricting play to the midfield.
Thrills were produced during the last five minutes of the first half by the home side. Danny Murphy, after making a good run, squared the ball to Kamara who made good contact with the ball from six-yards, but City’s Radhi Jaidi came up with a timely block to keep the score to 0-0 to the end of the first half.
Unlike the first half, the second half produced far more thrills as well as the vital goals, but only from the home side.
The Cottagers were sent into the lead by skipper Brian McBride in the 51st minute.
Bullard once again executed a perfect free kick to the captain, who dived ahead to head the ball home.
Spurred by the goal from McBride and the crowd support, Fulham created attack after attack to make themselves as safe as possible.
City had to rely on counter attacks but their attempts were intercepted by Fulham’s firm defence.
While on the other end, the host sealed the fate of City in the 87th minute when Erik Nevland inflated Fulham’s lead with a clinical finish from 12-yards.
