Match Preview: Wigan v Man United – The Red Devils Favourites To Win Title, Giggs Could Equal Charlton's Record
Manchester United start as the favourites to clinch their 10th Premiership title and 17th overall, when they take on Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium in the final game of the season on Sunday.
The Red Devils are top of the table with better goal-difference over second-place Chelsea, who host Bolton Wanderers.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side need a victory over the Latics to retain the title and if they can manage that, it will be the fifth time they achieve back-to-back titles since the Premier League came into existence.
United defender Nemanja Vidic is set to come back after a knock at Chelsea led to the Serbian suffering concussion and missing their last two games. However, striker Wayne Rooney is doubtful with his hip problem and at the most could get a place on the substitutes’ bench.
Nani is suspended after being sent off against West Ham United last weekend, and as such Ryan Giggs is likely to start in a match that would see him equal Bobby Charlton's record of 758 appearances for the Red Devils.
The 34-year-old former Wales international could then break that record in the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow, on May 21.
Steve Bruce’s side, meanwhile, have steered themselves away from the drop zone and are currently 13th. The Latics could finish the season at the 12th spot if they get a victory over the Red Devils and other results go their way.
They will, however, be without Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Kilbane as he has been told to rest by the boss after a back problem. Mario Melchiot and Erik Edman are out injured.
