Match Preview: West Ham v Aston Villa – The Hammers Aim For Top-Half End – Villa Keen On UEFA Cup, Mellberg Set For Farewells

West Ham, Aston Villa Premiership Match Previews

Alan Curbishley’s West Ham United will host Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa on the final day of the season at Upton Park on Sunday.

The Hammers would clinch a 10th-place finish if they beat the Villans. They could still finish in the top half if Tottenham fail to win against Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

The Villans, on the other hand, can still finish fifth in the table and qualify for UEFA Cup next season if they beat the Londoners and Everton lose against Newcastle United at Goodison Park.

Curbishley’s side have all through the season, been troubled by injury problems and going into the last game of the campaign, central defensive pair Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson are doubtful with hamstring and calf problems respectively.

In case the duo is not available, captain Lucas Neill will continue alongside England Under-19 international James Tomkins.

For Villa, Sweden defender Olof Mellberg will make his final appearance as he moves to Juventus at the end of his contract in the summer.

Midfielder Craig Gardner is yet to recover from a thigh injury suffered when on England Under-21 duty five weeks ago.
