Match Preview: Chelsea v Bolton Wanderers – The Blues Aim To Gatecrash Man United Party, Anelka Ineligible For Trotters Clash
Chelsea need a victory over lowly Bolton Wanderers, and Manchester United to drop points at Wigan, to win the Premiership title on the final day of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Blues, who had won the title back-to-back under Jose Mourinho before United snatched it last season, have staged a fine comeback and are on level points tally with the Red Devils, who however top the table on a superior goal-difference.
The 2007-08 campaign has been labelled by many as the most exciting season and it is befitting that the season finale sees two teams fighting it out for the top honours on the final day. It is forty years since the top two clubs in the English top-flight went into their final day fixtures level on points, and Manchester United were also involved the last time that happened.
The Red Devils however, lost on 11 May 1968, and Manchester City, who led their city rivals on goal average, won 4-3 at Newcastle to take the title. United were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland.
Avram Grant’s side, who are also into the Champions League finals pitted against Man United, will be hoping for a similar result tomorrow, as the Israeli eyes his first major trophy in charge of the Blues.
The west-Londoners will, however, be without striker Nicolas Anelka as he is ineligible to play against his former club according to transfer rules.
The 29-year-old France international had left the Trotters in January on loan before being permanently signed.
Defender Ricardo Carvalho is a doubt due to his back problem, and will need a late check, but striker Salomon Kalou will be ready after an ankle complaint.
Gary Megson's side, on the other hand, have all but assured themselves another season in the top-flight after a close relegation battle.
Midfield duo Joey O'Brien and Ivan Campo are likely to be available having missed last weekend's crucial 2-0 home win over Sunderland due to hamstring and calf injuries respectively. Goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, defenders Ricardo Gardner and Nicky Hunt remain sidelined.
