Manchester United Retain Premiership Title As Ronaldo & Giggs Score In 2-0 Win Against Wigan

Manchester United were crowned Premier League 2007-2008 champions as they scored a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the JJB stadium on Sunday. It is the Red Devils' 10th Premier League title and 17th overall.

Going into the final day of the season, Sir Alex Ferguson's side had to win to retain the title as Chelsea were also equal on points but down on goal-difference as they entertained Bolton Wanderers.

However, the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by the Trotters, to end up as the runners-up.

The Red Devils started with a strong line up welcoming back English striker Wayne Rooney and Serbian centre back Nemanja Vidic and dominated the proceedings.

In the 31st minute, Wayne Rooney was brought down from a challenge by Emmerson Boyce. It looked a little clumsy but the England man certainly made the most of it and referee Steve Bennett with no doubt pointed to the spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo who recently missed the penalty against Barcelona in the Champions League semis, stepped forward and made no mistake placing the ball past Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland to the delight of the team and supporters.

United looked lucky as Rio Ferdinand got away with what looked a handball at the other end as he blocked Jason Koumas shot.

In the 55th minute, Kirkland stretched full length to stop Wayne Rooney’s fierce grounder from finding the far corner of the nets.

Minutes later, the Latics keeper was once again in action this time blocking Argentina international Carlos Tevez's shot.

Manchester United had a sigh of relief in the 68th minute when Emile Heskey header off Jason Koumas`s free kick missed the target narrowly with keeper Van De Sar beaten.

Manchester United doubled their lead in the 79th minute through substitute Ryan Giggs who beat keeper Kirkland with a neat placement after being set up by Wayne Rooney.
