Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the performance of Manchester United defence as his side are now on the verge of a 10th Premier League title.

Regardless of what title rivals Chelsea do against Bolton, Ferguson’s side need a victory in the final game of the season at Wigan Athletic to retain the title.

"I've always said the foundation for any championship-winning side is the defence," the Red Devils boss said in the Mirror.

"And ours has been fantastic this season. They've formed a great understanding. The secret is in their character, determination and attitude. They can play together for years to come."
