Man City & Man United In Close Battle For Berbatov Even As Real Madrid Plan Last-Minute Raid For Spurs Ace

Manchester United and Manchester City are battling for the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s wantaway star striker Dimitar Berbatov.

City, earlier on the deadline day, made a shock move for the Bulgarian international and Spurs accepted the bid from Mark Hughes’ side.

City have been boosted by the takeover by a Arab Group - Abu Dhabi United Group - and as such have cash injection with the new owners aiming to make a big signing to move the Eastlands outfit forward.

The excited City boss Hughes confirmed on Sky Sports News that Spurs have accepted the bid, which is said to be in excess of £30million - a new British transfer record.

Hughes said: "I'm as stunned and excited by this as the fans are."

Hours after the City bid was lodged, it is reported by the Sky Sports News that Berbatov is currently holding talks with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the club's Carrington training ground.

However, the drama as the hours trickle down to the close of transfer period, could become more gripping as Spanish giants Real Madrid are also said to be planning to make a £36.5million (€45million) bid for his services.

United have tracked the 27-year-old over the last 12 months with the former Bayer Leverkusen man appearing to have come close to joining the Red Devils earlier this summer, but the Premiership giants have hesitated in matching the £30m price tag. They could now up the offer or put young striker Fraizer Campbell as the part of cash-plus-player deal to get their top-target.
