Man City & Fulham Still Waiting For Fair Play Results To Be Published As Both Teams Sweat Over UEFA Cup Place
There is still a huge amount of uncertainty as to whether Manchester City or Fulham will secure a place in Europe next season UEFA revealed that the English Premier League have gained an extra place in the UEFA Cup competition next season after finishing top of the fair play standings in Europe.
Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park ensured another season of Premier League football for The Cottagers, but have they managed to pip Manchester City to the UEFA Cup place after City’s crushing 8-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on the last day of the season?
The 8-1 defeat also saw City captain Richard Dunne sent-off with a straight red card in the 14th minute, With that it is possible that The Citizens may have blown their chance for a place in the UEFA Cup next season.
Because the awarding of points in the Fair Play League is so intricate - FOR INFORMATION ON HOW POINTS ARE SCORED CLICK HERE - it is impossible to predict the final scores until they are officially released, which is expected to be later today.
Manchester City are currently fifth in the domestic Fair Play League with a score of 299.8, with the four teams above them - Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal - having already gained places in European cup competition next season.
Fulham are also in with a good chance of gaining the place, with the Cottagers currently 7th in the fair-play league, (behind Everton who have already automatically qualified for the UEFA Cup next year), with a score of 297.8, just 2 points behind Manchester City.
Fulham received no bookings in their match against Portsmouth and so the final result is likely to be very close indeed.
Fulham have realised how close they could be to a dream end to their season, with Fulham FC’s communications officer Sarah Brooks saying: "It is certainly a possibility that we could be playing in the UEFA Cup.
"It is a complicated situation in which administration efficiency is also taken into consideration as well as on-field behaviour but we know we are in a good position.
"For now, we have enough to celebrate over staying up, but this could be another bonus, although we can't say more at this stage until all the documentation [from the adjudicators] is in."
It could indeed be a remarkable end to the season for Roy Hodgson who, a matter of weeks ago, must have been wondering what life in The Coca Cola Championship would be like.
