Liverpool’s Riera Move Imminent As Benitez Accepts Aston Villa’s Barry Chase Is Over?
Liverpool are once again linked with a move for Espanyol winger Albert Riera as it looks like midfielder Gareth Barry will remain out of reach of manager Rafa Benitez with the Reds board said to be refusing to meet Aston Villa’s £18m asking price.
Benitez had made England midfielder Barry his top target in the summer transfer window, but after four separate bids, the 27-year-old versatile player is still at Villa Park as Martin O’Neill is holding out for the right offer.
Liverpool Echo has reported that the Merseysiders are ready to turn their attentions to Riera, who has already been linked with the Premiership side this summer. The 26-year-old had spent a year on loan at Manchester City two seasons ago, and is looking forward to returning to England.
It is also claimed that a bid could now be imminent for Riera with the Reds’ move for Barry all but dead and Benitez ready to consider alternatives.
