Veteran defender Sami Hyypia is closing in on a new deal at Liverpool that will ensure he completes 10 years at the Merseyside club.

The 34-year-old Finland international is in the closing stages of his current contract with the Reds after having joined the Reds under Gerard Houllier back in 1999

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said on the club’s official website: "Rick Parry is due to talk to Sami's agent this weekend and hopefully everything will then be finished."

Hyypia has already made 37 appearances this season after he was thrust into action week in and week out due to injury problems of Daniel Agger in particular.
