Liverpool’s Alonso, Arbeloa & Pennant Futures Uncertain
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, winger Jermaine Pennant and defender Alvaro Arbeloa face uncertain futures after it emerged that none of them are yet assured of Anfield stay for next season, due to different reasons.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez needs to sell in order raise funds to finance the moves for top-targets – Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry and Tottenham striker Robbie Keane. He has already sold Peter Crouch to Portsmouth and Scott Carson to West Brom.
Reds’ plans to sell Spain international Alonso did not materialise so far as Italian giants Juventus backed out after not agreeing with the £16m valuation. Liverpool’s Premiership rivals, Arsenal are now linked with the 26-year-old, who is now looking to hold talks with Benitez, having returned to Melwood on Friday after the extended break following Euro 2008 success.
Spain full-back Arbeloa, according to Liverpool Post, wants to move back to his homeland for personal reasons.
Pennant, meanwhile, is being linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers despite recently stressing that he is keen to stay at Anfield.
