Leighton Baines has signed a five-year contract at Everton after the left-back completed a medical and agreed personal terms.

The 22-year-old England U-21 international had generated a lot of interest in Wigan Athletic’s Premiership rivals after turning down a new deal at the JJB Stadium.

As such, the Toffees, Newcastle United and Liverpool were linked with Baines, who then turned down a £6m move to newly promoted side Sunderland.

Baines however has now joined David Moyes’ side in what is said to be a £5million move.

Baines told their official website: "I am very happy now it is all done and I am looking forward to getting on with it."

"I think people knew this was the place I wanted to come and I am glad now that it is all done.

"I am a local lad and all my family support Everton so it's good to be here at last."

Meanwhile, Wigan boss Chris Hutchings has revived the trail for West Bromwich Albion left-back Paul Robinson.

The Latics had inched close to signing the 28-year-old last week but the deal had not been completed due to “stalemate on the medical side.”

"There is a bit of a stalemate on the medical side and with the fee as regards Paul Robinson," Hutchings told the Daily Star.

"It's ongoing at the moment, but it depends on whether we can do anything different in terms of how we want to pay the fee."
