Chelsea’s Michael Essien Set For 'Several Months' On The Sidelines

Chelsea Player Injury and Suspension News

Chelsea's Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien is set to be on the sidelines for quite a long time after damaging his knee ligaments while he was on international duty.

Even though the Ghana officials were well aware that the 25-year old was having trouble with his knee, they still risked him for the Tripoli clash against Libya.

The Chelsea star had to leave the field in the first half itself. The injury is a major blow to Luiz Felipe Scolari's side, who also have Germany captain Michael Ballack currently out with an injury.

Chelsea confirmed Essien's injury on thier official website, stating: "He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo an operation as soon as the majority of the swelling has subsided.

"We expect this to happen in a week's time. In the meantime, Michael has started rehab in the aqua therapy centre at Cobham which will improve the condition of the knee prior to surgery. A return to full fitness is not expected for several months."
