Euro 2008

UPDATE: Holland head coach Marco van Basten has cut-down his provisional 30-man squad for the EURO 2008 Finals in Austria/Switzerland, and updated it to a provisional 26-man squad for the tournament.

After Dutch international veteran Clarence Seedorf requested Oranje head coach van Basten to be withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for the EURO 2008 Finals reasoning that he feels his fitness is currently below-par, the Oranje coach was left with 29 players to choose from, but added fit-again defender Khalid Boulahrouz to bring it back to 30.

The 43-year-old Holland head coach has now trimmed his squad to just 26 players, with one keeper and two further outfield players still due to be dropped before the final line-up of three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players is announced to UEFA officials before the Wednesday 28 May squad deadline.

There are still seven English Premier League players featuring in Marco van Basten’s 26-man provisional squad, with Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar likely to feature as The Oranje number one choice.

Aston Villa’s Wilfred Bouma, Wigan Athletic’s Mario Melchiot and André Ooijer from Blackburn Rovers all feature in defence for The Netherlands.

In the striking department, Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel and Arsenal’s Robin van Persie are also still in the squad and expected to feature in the Finals in Austria/Switzerland which kick-off on June 7.

Urby Emanuelson, Kew Jaliens, Hedwiges Maduro and Danny Koevermans have all been dropped by van Basten.

The 26 remaining players in van Basten’s squad will be travelling to a training camp in Noordwijk for pre-tournament training before being reduced to a maximum of 23 before the final line-up of three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players is announced to UEFA officials before the Wednesday 28 May squad deadline.
