Heartache For Hull As Campbell Joins Spurs As Part Of Berbatov Deal
Premier League debutantes Hull City were left deflated last night after main transfer target Fraizer Campbell was caught up in the Dimitar Berbatov saga and ended up being transferred to Tottenham Hotspur on loan as part of the deal that took the Bulgarian to Old Trafford for £30.75million.
Tigers boss Phil Brown, was reportedly led to believe that once United had secured the capture of Berbatov from White Hart Lane, Campbell would leave for the KC Stadium in a reported £7million move. Which would have smashed the club record.
However, with local rivals Manchester City threatening to hijack the Berbatov switch after they had agreed a fee with Spurs. United were spurred into action, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson pulling out all the stops to make sure that the former Bayer Leverkusen striker would end up on the United side of Manchester.
This in the end included Campbell joining the North London team on a season-long loan as a sweetener to make the deal go through, with Tottenham manager Juande Ramos still needing to add a striker to his squad.
Brown is likely to be left feeling bemused after this, with the Tigers boss feeling he had done everything he could to bring the player, who was a major factor last season on loan in helping them to promotion to the Premiership back to the Yorkshire club.
