Wigan Athletic and Arsenal are locked goalless at half time of their Premiership clash at the JJB Stadium on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s side showed their aggressive intent right from the start, but failed to make the most of their chances, although there were few clear-cut opportunities for the league leaders with the Latics defending well.

The Gunners meant business straightaway as within seconds of the kick-off a beautiful through pass saw Cesc Fabregas send Emmanuel Adebayor on his way, but Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland was also quick to advance and made a fine save as he closed down the charging Togolese.

In the 36th minute, Kirkland dived to his right and deflected the ball away for a corner after a header by Fabregas.

Latics skipper Mario Melchiot and fellow defender Erik Edman made important interceptions to thwart attempts of Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner.

At the other end, the Gunners custodian Manuel Almunia did not have even one save to make as most of the play was restricted to the rival half.
