Everton v Portsmouth Match Preview: Pompey Hope To Open League Account Against The Toffees
Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth will travel to Everton looking for their first point in the Premiership on Saturday.
Pompey are still to open their account this season and are placed at the bottom of the league table after two defeats in as many games against Chelsea and Manchester United. They will hope they get at least a point at Goodison Park. Everton have three points from two games.
On the other hand, Toffees boss David Moyes will be pleased having finally found some success in the summer transfer market this week. With Lars Jacobsen and Segundo Castillo in the bag, the Merseysiders could also have striker Louis Saha in their ranks in time for Pompey clash as a deal with Man United is agreed but the French international needs to prove his fitness to complete the move.
Redknapp refused to accept that it has been a bad start for his side as he didn’t expect much from the first two games, and also anticipates a tough clash against Everton.
“How many teams will beat Manchester United and Chelsea this year?” said Redknapp on the club’s official website. “I don’t think they’ll lose more than three games each.
“Without being a silly optimist, how many points would you expect us to get from these opening three games?
“We took one point from them last season. And that point was against Manchester United when we got absolutely battered in the second half. We played better against them this season and lost 1-0.
“It would be nice to get a point or three points up at Everton. But if you’ve got any brains, how many points did people expect us to get from our first three games. Nine? I don’t think so, unless you’re an idiot.”
On tomorrow’s clash, he added: “It will be a tough test. Everton are a strong side. Yakubu’s a great goalscorer. I know all about him because I signed him for us originally.”
Amongst concerns on playing personnel, Portsmouth boss will hope that striker Jermain Defoe recovers from a virus to continue partnership with Peter Crouch.
Niko Kranjcar (ankle surgery), Kanu (thigh) and David Nugent (groin) are still sidelined. Ben Sahar and John Utaka are however, available.
