Everton To Swoop For Newcastle's Cut-Price Smith?

Newcastle United, Everton Premiership Transfer News

Everton manager David Moyes has had a frustrating time this summer in trying to attract players to Goodison Park. The latest player to be linked with the Toffees is Newcastle United’s Alan Smith, according to reports.

With the expected departure of Andy Johnson to Fulham for £13million, Moyes now has the funds to make a move for 27-year-old Smith, who could be available for as little as £1.5million after costing the Magpies £6million from Manchester United in 2007.

United boss Keegan has faced similar problems in bringing in players to St James’ Park, but could allow England International Smith to leave in order to cut the wage bill at Newcastle. This would also give Keegan the funds to strengthen his defensive options.

Moyes remains confident of bolstering the squad at the Merseyside club before the Premier League season commences on August 16th.

“I am hoping we will have some in before the start of the season,” Moyes said.

“But I am not going to turn around and say I am totally confident because you never know what happens.

“But, yes, I am hoping that we will end up getting a few in.”
