Chelsea Continue Unbeaten Run As Lampard Scores Winner Against Portsmouth - The Blues Top Table, Lead United By 8 Points
Chelsea maintained their unbeaten run in the Premiership this season edging past Portsmouth by a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. They are also unbeaten at home stretching the record run to 65 matches.
Jose Mourinho's side also climbed up to the top of the table and have 10 points in four games - eight more than defending champions Manchester United, who have two points from three games and play Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Chelsea started the game on an attacking note but later mellowed down only to come back with a bang with a goal coming through Frank Lampard.
In the 1st minute itself Peru International Claudio Pizarro, who opened his account with the Blues on his debut match itself, tried a right footed shot from 20-yards which went just past David James goal.
Kanu was one of the Portsmouth players who was a tremendous threat to Chelsea, coming with a number of raids time and again.
In the 8th minute Kanu tried to test Chelsea keeper Petr Cech with a long ranger, but his strike missed the target narrowly.
Chelsea’s summer signing Florent Malouda sent a teasing cross into the Portsmouth danger zone where Pizarro leapt high but couldn’t direct his header into the nets.
While dominating major share of the attacks, Pompey were looking as though they were going to be a threat to Blues' home record when in the 23rd minute they came close to opening their account.
Kanu sent a perfect cross to Matthew Taylor who getting the ball on his favourite right foot, saw his shot sail inches past the goal.
In the 31st minute Chelsea burst back into the match when Frank Lampard, finally broke the deadlock, when getting hold of Didier Drogba’s back heel pass, fired the ball into the nets past the diving keeper James.
In the closing minutes of the first half Lampard once again tried a powerful shot from 30-yard from a dead ball situation, but this time James responded to him perfectly.
In the second half both the teams held equal amount of possession of the match.
In the 53rd minute Kanu squeezing himself inside the Blues set the ball on platter to Sean Davis, who has not scored for almost a year and a half, went slightly off balance and ballooned the ball over.
Minutes later Gary O’Neill who missed the start off the Premiership season due to injury, sent a warning to the Blues when his strike almost made its way into the back of the nets.
Malouda finding some space tried a hot blooded shot to which surprisingly defender Sol Campbell turner his back on the ball, but luckily the ball went out.
In the 80th minute Joe Cole who came in for Wright- Phillips tried a stiff grounder from 20-yards which went out causing no trouble to keeper James.
