Beckenbauer In Germany V English Debate As Tottenham’s Loss Is Hamburg’s Gain – Jol Could Have Taken Spurs Top?
Franz Beckenbauer believes Martin Jol should never have been axed at Tottenham Hotspur, who have now got off to their worst start since 1912 under manager Juande Ramos.
Spurs have failed to win a league game so far this season and after the opening seven ties, have just two points to be stuck at the bottom of the table. Recent reports have also suggested that the Spanish tactician, who guided the north-Londoners to Carling Cup glory last season after replacing Jol, has six games to turnaround Spurs’ fortunes.
A similar start, but by no means such a dire situation, last season following consecutive fifth-place finishes; had seen Jol losing his job, but legend Beckenbauer is shocked that the Premiership outfit had sacked the Dutchman, who is now in charge of Bundesliga side Hamburg.
“I don't know the exact circumstances of what happened at Tottenham but it's hard to believe any team would not want Martin Jol as coach,” Bayern Munich president Beckenbauer told the News of the World.
“He is doing a fantastic job at Hamburg. Your loss is our gain, if you like. It's another huge victory for German football over you English.
“I remember spotting his talents when he was a player at Bayern. That was a long time ago but it seems he also has many talents as a coach.
“The physical conditioning and discipline of his players is excellent. The players behave very well. The style Hamburg are showing is really excellent, they have a genuine chance of winning the Bundesliga.
“The first time I saw him this season was against Bayern in his first game of the season. His team were 2-0 down away from home against the reigning champions yet they came back to draw 2-2.”
