Spurs Chasing Roma’s Vucinic, Groningen’s Berg & Marseille’s Cana – See Them In Action - Pavlyuchenko Leaving?
Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be considering using out-of-favour Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko as a bargaining tool to entice Roma striker Mirko Vučinić to White Hart Lane.
Vučinić, who usually plays as a conventional striker or on the left wing, is known for his speed, dribbling and goal scoring abilities, particularly with his head. The 25-year-old is the current captain of Montenegro, having decided to play for them following independence from Serbia in 2006.
Any deal may take some time as Roma are in the midst of takeover talks, but the Italian club’s coach, Luciano Spalletti has been tracking Pavlyuchenko throughout the close season, and wants to sign the Russian international either permanently or on loan if a transfer cannot be agreed.
However, if Vučinić is unwilling to make the switch to north London, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will join the growing list of managers chasing the signature of Swedish goal-machine Marcus Berg.
Since joining Dutch outfit Groningen in 2007, the 22-year-old has scored at a rate of more than a goal every other game with 33 goals in just 56 appearances; and he has just finished the Uefa Under-21 Championship finals, claiming the Golden Boot with an impressive seven goals.
In all, he has 10 goals from 19 games at Under-21 level and 1 goal from seven senior appearances for Sweden. He is renowned for his heading ability, good touch and being able to shoot and pass with both feet, and also for scoring from unusual angles.
FC Groningen appear resigned to losing their prized asset, but the growing interest has made his value rocket. Before the Under-21 finals prices of around £4.5 million were being reported; these are now thought to have risen to £10m or more. Ajax were thought to be interested in Berg, but the player has already stated that his dream is to play in the English Premier League or Spain’s La Liga.
Meanwhile, with doubts remaining over the White Hart Lane future of Jermaine Jenas, Spurs are considering making a move for Marseille midfielder Lorik Cana after the Kosovo-born Albanian international was told he is free to leave the club.
Cana, who is the current Marseille captain, is being linked with Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester City and Hamburg after Jose Anigo, Marseille's sporting director, said: "It's not that he's shown his desire to leave. It's simply that it's been four years that Lorik has been here and he has the right to want to experience other things. Today we're open to his transfer, if something happens we'll listen."
Cana joined Marseille from Paris St-Germain in 2005, becoming captain two years later following the departure of Habib Beye to Newcastle. His no-nonsense style of play is ideal for the Premiership, and he would add some much-needed steel to the heart of the Tottenham midfield.
