FULL-TIME REPORT: ARSENAL 2-0 STANDARD LIEGE: Nasri & Denilson See Gunners Progress To Last 16

Arsenal have beaten Standard Liege 2-0 to secure a place in the last sixteen in the European Champions League.

Firts-half goals from Samir Nasri and Denilson earned a place for Arsene Wenger as Champions League Group H winners with a decent win over Belgian champions Standard Liege.

The game was hard fought in the early stages, with both sides striking the woodwork in the early stages, but with Arsenal having the majority of possession and the better chances at goal.

Both sides also had penalty appeals waved away by referee Konrad Plautz before Samir Nasri took advantage of a slip by Landry Mulemo to slot home a ball from Thomas Vermaelen.

Arsenal midfielder Denilson sealed the win in the second minute of first-half injury-time with superb swerving 35-yard strike which left Standard Liege keeper Sinan Bolat no chance of saving.

Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky both came on in the second-half of the match, which was far less entertaining than the first period, although the home-side continued to dominate.

Standard Liege had a couple of decent chances at goal in the last ten minutes of the match, with substitute Zoro Gohi-Bi also hitting the post and Eliaquim Mangala shooting just over the crossbar before Liege were reduced to 10 men after Mehdi Gonzalez was sent off for head-butting Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas.

Arsenal held on to seal the 2-0 win, which sees them top Group H in the Champions League on 13 points, with Greek side Olympiakos currently in 2nd place with 7 points, while 3rd placed Standard Liege are seemingly heading for a place in the Europa League, along with Liverpool, who failed to progress from Group E despite beating Debrecen 1-0 in Hungary this evening.
